Crime in Yeoville drops

YEOVILLE – While Yeoville Police Station statistics show a drop in crime overall, theft out of motor vehicles are still a growing problem.

 

The individual crime statistics of Yeoville Police Station displayed an impressive drop in crime, however, theft out of motor vehicle crimes are on the rise.

The station saw a large decrease in contact crimes in the last year with murder and attempted murder decreasing by 41 per cent and 19.4 per cent respectively. The statistics show that murder numbers in Yeoville have increased slowly between 2012 and last year.

Sexual offences, which includes rape and sexual assault, in Yeoville have dropped in the past year by 3.8 per cent, with 52 reported cases last year and 50 this year. Under this category, sexual assault had increased dramatically with the amount of reported cases more than doubling in the previous year. Last year, there were five cases of sexual assault while this year it had increased to 13 cases.

According to the statistics, the greatest concern in the area is theft out of or from motor vehicles which has had 549 reported cases at the Yeoville Police Station this year. Cases of this crime have risen steadily since 2010 with only 243 reports in that year. Last year, it rose to 400.

Commenting on the rise of theft out of motor vehicles, spokesperson for Yeoville Police Station, Captain Sifiso Mabizela said, “We are doing our best to curb this escalating number by working closely with the street vendors and our street patrollers. Unfortunately, most often, the victims notice the crime too late and it becomes difficult to investigate.
