Public lecture at NICD in Sandringham

SANDRINGHAM – The NICD will host a lecture on the link between bats and emerging diseases on 20 November.

 

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) will host a public lecture on 20 November led by Professor Wanda Markotter.

The lecture titled, Linking bats with emerging diseases: Do we know for sure?, will be led by Markotter who is currently the South African research chair in infectious diseases of animals and is part of the faculty of health sciences at the University of Pretoria.

Markotter’s research began with her interest in bat Lyssaviruses, also known as the Lagos bat viruses. Other significant aspects of her research revolves around the development of new diagnostic tools to improve diagnosis of rabies in the developing world.

The lecture will be held at the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Training Centre at the NICD centre in Sandringham at 6pm.
