The Parkview junior and senior schools continued their centenary celebrations on 28 October with a Centenary School Run through Zoo Lake.
The run, which has been one of a variety hosted by the school to celebrate 100 years since the school opened, had over 800 people registered to participate in the day. Despite the bitterly cold morning, schoolchildren and their families showed up in their costumes to help raise money for the schools.
Caryl Kelly, head of the parent-teacher association at Parkview Senior School told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that the day was incredibly exciting and all those in charge of organising the event were happy to see how it turned out.
The race began at the senior school and wound through the Zoo Lake before returning back to the school for breakfast.
Kelly added that although they had been hoping to have about 1 000 people registered for the run, people might have been put off by the cold weather.
However, the weather did not dampen the mood of those involved, with many wearing costumes to add to the fun.
“We raised R50 000 this year, which will go to our Centenary Fund. We’ve got a huge list of things we’d like to do,” said Kelly.
The fund was created in order to provide extra opportunities for children at the school who do not have financial means. All the celebrations hosted have raised money for the Centenary Fund.
