Cremations in Joburg to continue over weekends

JOBURG — Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo apologises for crematoria misunderstanding.

The custodians of the city’s cemeteries, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, has announced that they have put temporary measures in place to allow for cremations over the weekends and public holidays in places such as the Braamfontein and Brixton crematoria.

This announcement comes after the public was told last week that Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo were reverting to the stipulations in the bylaws and would not be considering cremations over the weekends, only from Mondays to Fridays.

According to the MMC for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the ceasing of cremations over weekends was due to the non-compliance of mandatory administrative processes that must be undertaken and authenticated prior to a cremation.

“Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo would like to apologise for any misunderstanding caused and would like to assure all affected communities that a review of the bylaws and City Parks and Zoo’s management processes are underway to ensure that families are not inconvenienced,” she said.
