WARNING: AfriForum SMS ‘a hoax’

JOBURG – A message urging supporters to send an sms at a cost of R1.50 has been making its way through social media.

A message has been circulating on platforms such as WhatsApp, pleading for votes from the public, which will enable the specific party to request the United Nations to intervene against farm murders in South Africa.

The message reads that the organisation wants 96 000 more votes to reach its target of 100 000. To vote, one can send an SMS to 45353.

However, a second message started circulating that the former was a hoax.

It said that although AfriForum was at the forefront of seeking support for its campaign for increasing international pressure on the government to prioritise farm murders, the number that one should send an SMS to is different.

On AfriForum’s website, in the article published in 2015, it read that one should send an SMS to 32534. Whether this number is still functional has not been confirmed.

In the 2015 article, AfriForum said it declared the month of November as a national month of protest against farm murders.

After police minister Fikile Mbalula released the national crime statistics on 24 October, the organisation said it launched a civil motion of no confidence against the minister.

It criticised Mbalula for failing to release specific figures and statistics of farm attacks and murders.
