Security Awareness Day a great success

PARKTOWN NORTH – The Security Awareness Day allowed residents to learn more about various units within the police.

The first Security Awareness Day hosted by the Parktown North Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association and the Parkview Police on 21 October was a huge success.

Community members also had the opportunity to meet various role players within their community.

The day included a variety of fun activities including demonstrations by Gringo and Bailey, two dogs from 24/7 Security’s K9 Unit as well as demonstrations by the bomb squad.

“The crowds were regaled by the [Gauteng] Police Choir who are the national champions for 2017. They started their performance with a rousing version of the national anthem. The police’s cultural group gave colourful performances that really got the crowd going,” said Lee-Ann Louverdis, chairperson of the residents association.

Louverdis said when community members stand together, they will be able to accomplish so much more. She referred to the phrase,’sticks in a bundle are unbreakable’.

Children were entertained throughout the day by the police’s Mounted Unit and were able to ask questions to their heart’s content about the role of the horses and dogs in the police. They also had the opportunity to have their faces painted to reflect their favourite superheroes.

“The Pink Ladies were kept busy helping parents to document key information that they could keep and use in the event that their children go missing. It was interesting to find out how wide the Pink Ladies’ network stretches and what a vital role they play in reuniting families with their loved ones who have gone missing,” added Louverdis.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station said the event was very entertaining to all who attended and she hopes more people will attend the next safety awareness event. “It was really great because we want to build our relationship with the community and also other law enforcement [entities].”

“The Parktown North Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association wants to thank all residents’ associations who spread the word about the event, as well as the sponsors that financed the day,” said Louverdis.
