UPDATE: Hannah finally flies to the US for her medical treatment

OAKLANDS – The family still needs to reach their goal and you can help!

Hannah Katz, an 11-year-old girl fighting a rare cancer disease, is currently in US to be treated for her rare form of cancer called embryonal parameningeal rhabdomyosarcoma.

This according to Hannah Our Hero Facebook page, a social media page designed to raise funds and update the public about her condition.

Katz left South Africa earlier in October.

The Katz family made a call to the community to assist with financial donations in a story printed in the North Eastern Tribune week ending 29 September.

The girl from Oaklands is being treated at the St Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Her family, through the assistance from the community, have managed to get her to a hospital, however, they are still looking for more funding to cover the costs of her treatment including their travel and stay.

“The family still needs to raise $500 000 [about R680 000], of which they’re $200 000 [about R270 000] short for Hannah to get the special treatment she needs to hopefully cure her,” stated a post on the Facebook page.

To raise funds for Katz, her school, King David High School in Linksfield, held a Cancer Awareness Day where children shaved and sprayed their hair and all proceeds went to funding her treatment.

The Relate Trust, a company known for bracelets sold in support of various causes, sold special bracelets in support of Katz.

Her friends Sarah Prissman, Hannah Lever, Erin Lutz and Daniel Strauss also made badges and ribbons and sold them on a market day.

As posted by Hannah’s dad, Julian, on the Facebook page, “St Jude is a non-profit organisation. They incur the same cost of treatment as any other medical institution but do not commence or halt treatment on the patient’s inability to pay.”

The family had to delay a few scans recently because Katz came down with an infection.
