Glenhazel schoolchildren battle it out at the library competition

GLENHAZEL – The library competition sharpens children's reading, speaking and reasoning abilities.

Glenhazel Primary School children have put their school on the map after they were issued with certificates of excellence in the regional library competition.

The Grade 4 and 5 children had to read 15 novels and participate in various activities including question-and-answer sessions about the novels.

Nobuhle Zondo, a Grade 5 English teacher at the school, said this is an annual competition for local schools working with local libraries.

Zondo said the first round of the competition was on 7 September and her children scooped the first position to proceed to the zonal level which was on 15 September.

They got position two at the zonal level and proceeded to the regional level held at Midrand Halfway House Library on 11 October, said Zondo adding that five of her children participated in the competitions.

“They got certificates at the regional level, however, they didn’t do well. They came out in position three out of the four schools that were participating.

“There were two categories in the competition. In the first category, a different question is directed to each school and points are awarded if the school gets it right. If they fail, it’s then directed to another school.”

There are about 40 questions in the first category, and after a five-minute break, the teacher said it’s the second category where any first school to raise a hand is given five marks for a correct answer.

“The school with most marks at the end is the winner,” she said.

“This sharpens their reading, speaking and reasoning skills as well as their book reviewing abilities. Socially, they learn to relate with other learners from other schools, and furthermore, teamwork is learnt.”

Though it was a challenge, Zondo said both her and the children enjoyed the challenge adding that it is because it promotes a culture of reading.
