Zoo Lake hosts pilates class

ZOO LAKE – A pilates class was held at Zoo Lake as part of an effort towards educating people on the importance of spinal health.

Zoo Lake played host to a fun-filled pilates class that aimed to create awareness about spinal health.

Executive member of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students, Kirsten Glover said pilates exercises, which include core strengthening exercises, would benefit both young and old, regardless of fitness level.

“We target [among others] primary school learners in grades 5 to 7 and teach them exercises to strengthen their core and their backs to protect their spines, which we encourage them to do every day,” added Glover, who added that a visit to a retirement village was another one of this year’s highlights.

Fifty people turned up at Zoo Lake to enjoy the pilates class. Glover emphasised the need for having fun while keeping healthy. “Making pilates fun makes a huge difference. Doing it in an environment like Zoo

Lake where there’s a road right there, people who drove, ran and walked by could see us doing this class while we were having so much fun.

“Hopefully that motivated more people and made them want to get involved and see the purpose behind what we do.”

The benefits of pilates also include stabilising the back and improving posture. Poor posture is known to be one of the worst causes of back pain.
