Small fire at Joburg Zoo in Parkview quickly contained

PARKVIEW – A fire broke out on the afternoon of 12 October but was extinguished by zoo staff members.

A small fire broke out at Johannesburg Zoo on the afternoon of 12 October, however, the fire was quickly contained by staff members at the zoo.

According to Jenny Moodley, the spokesperson for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the small fire broke out on the border wall of The South African National Museum of Military History.

Moodley said the fire had been quickly contained by staff at the zoo using fire extinguishers. The gemsbok enclosure, which was nearest to the fire, was unaffected and no animals were harmed.

She added that the fire might have been caused by a person who dropped a cigarette while walking near the boundary wall and the dry leaves caught alight.

She added that the zoo would try to ensure that all leaves on the outside of the boundary wall are swept away in the future to prevent a similar incident from occurring.
