1st Germans Scout Group from Parktown completes 14km hike

PARKTOWN – The young scouts participated in the hike to achieve advancement badges.

The 1st Germans Scout Group based in Parktown hosted a hike for 11 young adventurers in order for them to achieve their advancement badges.

The hike was led by Max van Heerden so that he could advance to Adventurers. The hike began at the Lipizzaners Farm where the young boys were able to learn more about the history of the Lipizzaners which were saved during WW2.

The hike also included a guided tour of the Mapatiza Mine to learn about precious and semi-precious stones followed by a gruelling 14km hike. The scouts also had a science lesson while making their dinner, which taught them about yeast and gluten bonds. The following day the scouts hiked another 6km to get back to Lipizzaners Farm in order to conclude their adventure.

Max’s mother, Tania van Heerden said, “This particular advancement badge work for a scout is very difficult and takes weeks of planning. We as Scouters would like to show other youngsters how awesome this kind of adventure is and hopefully, they too will join our scouts’ group.”

She added, “The 1st Germans would like to thank the Kyalami community for their warm reception and for hosting the event, which was so much more than just scouts achieving advancement badges; it’s about friendships formed and learning by doing.”
