Update: 27 September

Norwood police station spokesperson Captain Elliot Tshivhase has confirmed knowledge of the incident whereby partygoers were involved in an altercation with security at a music festival and added that a case of assault had been opened by a male victim.

“About eight people sustained stab wounds when a fight ensued during the [The Sounds like Summer] festival at the James & Ethel Gray Park,” said Tshivase. However, in a turn of events, police say the complainant decided to withdraw charges in the early hours of 26 September.

“No reason was given by the complainant as to why the case was being closed,” explained the captain.”Therefore, the matter is out of our hands for now. Maybe the victim decided to take the case to a different police station.”

It is unclear at this stage if any of the other stab wound victims will pursue charges. The alleged security company involved in the incident could not be reached for comment at this stage.

The Sounds like Summer music festival, which drew crowds in by the hundreds, took place at the James and Ethel Grey Park in Melrose Saturday.

The fight, which left several people injured, occurred after a few party-goers were allegedly asked to leave by security. However, eyewitnesses have taken to social media to tell their versions of the event.

According to an eyewitness, the ordeal was an abuse of power and left many feeling helpless. “To the people that witness and felt as helpless as I did, this is something I hope can actually make a change and bring awareness to the people that are supposed to look after us, when in actual fact they abuse their authority and position of power,” the eyewitness told www.theklique.com

“The Olympus security company not only threw the first punch but they brutally kicked, pushed and punched both people part of the fight and those who tried to break it up. In fairness, those who were involved were not in the right either but they weren’t wearing the uniform that I believe holds them accountable, the guys wearing Olympus protection security uniforms are meant to be there to protect and prevent brutal attacks but they were the very people that escalated it,” continued the unnamed eyewitness.

The music festival released a statement on Facebook following the incident, defending the actions of security personnel.
