#ICYMI: Taxi driver jailed for 15 years

JOBURG - A Johannesburg taxi driver served with a 15-year prison.

A Johannesburg taxi driver who handed himself over to police after he shot and killed a passenger was served with a 15-year prison sentence by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 18 September.

The Court heard that despite an argument ensuing between the two men, Mbuyiseni Mgaga (36) could have avoided the death of Mhlonipheni Dlamini (32), who at the time, was travelling home from work.

“The victim, who was a passenger in the taxi, got into an argument with Mgaga. He [the victim] then got out of the taxi and the driver shot him once in the upper body at the corner of Commissioner and Von Weilligh Streets in the Joburg CBD,” said Captain Xoli Mbele, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

“The incident occurred before midnight on 29 November last year. Shortly after arriving on the scene, paramedics declared Dlamini dead. Mgaga handed himself over to police the next day.” Mbele said Mgaga was in possession of a licensed firearm at the time of the shooting. He has been incarcerated at the Johannesburg Central Prison.
