St John’s College rowers lend their skills

JOHANNESBURG – St John's College rowing team took two indoor rowing schools for some training on water.

St John’s College rowers helped two indoor rowing schools by taking them out on the water at the Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club.

Spokesperson for the college Jacqui Deeks said, “Rowing South Africa works to develop the sport of rowing in South Africa with the introduction of indoor rowing to schools. Indoor rowers train and compete on rowing machines throughout the year.”

At the recent Rowing Coaches Conference, Rowing South Africa’s development coordinator Virginia Mabaso appealed to the water rowing schools to pair up with the indoor rowing schools and introduce them to rowing on water.

In response to this call, St John’s College invited two indoor rowing schools, Elukhanyisweni High School and Leonard Ntshuntshe Secondary School, both based in Emalahleni, to row on water for the first time.

Deeks added, “The top performing indoor rowers from each of these schools were able to row in boats for the first time. “The athletes spent the day in crew boats called octuple sculls and enjoyed the facilities of the Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club.”

Head rowing coach at St John’s College Grant Dodds said, “It was a wonderful experience for all involved and the next camp, where the three schools will team up once again, is eagerly anticipated.”
