Orchards Clinic still closed

ORCHARDS – The Orchards Clinic construction has not resumed since the discovery of a structural fault.

The start of October will mark almost two years since construction on the Orchards Clinic began, but the project is far from complete following the discovery of a structural problem in March this year.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) spokesperson Susan Monyai described the problems as ‘design oversight issues relating to key support structural elements of the building’.

But rather than the project meeting its March 2017 deadline, a full investigation was launched. The agency was expected to conclude the investigation at the end of March and move forward with the R40-million clinic’s construction.

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher said, “The last thing I heard was that the JDA was getting engineers to fix the issues, but nothing seems to have happened.” He added that residents in the area have been left in the dark, with no word on when the project will resume.

It began as part of the Corridors of Freedom project to give state-of-the-art healthcare services to various communities. The clinic was in line with the National Health Core Standards and the National Health Insurance (NHI) requirements, and also accommodated Environmental Health Services.

The North Eastern Tribune has attempted to contact the Johannesburg Development Agency regarding the issue but has not received comment.
