UPDATE: Hillbrow Theatre victim gets a proper send-off

HILLBROW - The family of Percy Ndlovu, one of the victims of the Hillbrow Theatre shooting, say their last goodbyes.

The family of Percy Ndlovu, who was murdered while he attended a show at the Hillbrow Theatre in August, is demanding justice for their son.

Ndlovu was killed and seven more theatre goers were injured when a man opened fire in a shooting spree at the Hillbrow Theatre after demanding his ‘lost’ cellphone.

The suspect has since been arrested and is currently in police custody.

During the memorial service held at the theatre on 8 September, families and friends paid their last respects to the slain Ndlovu.

Various speakers took turns to say their goodbyes and many said they are saddened by Ndlovu’s death describing him as a ‘humble’ person.

Speaking after the service, Ndlovu’s uncle Ronald Mkhize, called for a harsh sentence and said they hope the justice system will not fail them.

“It’s not nice to see your nephew in this form. As a family, we’ve always had expectations for him and he was a very brilliant young man,” said Mkhize.

“We hope that the justice system of South Africa will not fail us. The shooter [must] face the full might of the law for his evil deeds. Justice must prevail for my nephew and for all the other victims.”

The suspect and Ndlovu come from the neighbouring communities in Zimbabwe. It is, however, not clear if they also knew each other. Mkhize said according to rumours doing the rounds the suspect also lives in Hillbrow as Ndlovu did.

“As a family, we don’t know this person but… the community of Hillbrow knows him and are scared of him,” he said.

Ndlovu, who leaves behind a wife and a two-year-old son, was buried in Plumtree in Zimbabwe on 10 September.

Attempts to get a comment from Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini were unsuccessful. He has not responded to an email which was sent to him on 11 August. He did not respond to the North Eastern Tribune’s phone calls on 12 August either.

Hillbrow police spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, said: “The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on 14 September.”
