What watering is allowed for your garden?

JOBURG – The current Level 1 water restrictions are still in effect in Joburg.

Although water restrictions still remain in Joburg, residents are unsure of what is and what isn’t allowed when it comes to watering gardens.

The current restrictions allow residents to water their gardens only during night time hours. From 1 September to 31 March, between 6am and 6pm, residents are not permitted to water their garden. Residents also cannot use a hosepipe to clean paved areas and driveways with the municipality’s water.

But can buckets be used to water gardens during daylight hours? What about sprinkler systems during night time hours?

Eleanor Mavimbela, Johannesburg Water’s spokesperson replied. “You cannot water your garden at all. No water whatsoever.”

She did say that sprinklers and irrigation systems are allowed between 6pm and 6am, but pleaded that residents try to be water wise.

“We must always be mindful of this precious commodity. Residents should be mindful of the amount of water they do use.”

The current Level 1 restrictions were implemented early this year after the Level 2 restrictions were lifted.

Although Metro police issued 665 fines to those who did not abide by the Level 2 restrictions, law enforcement has calmed down a bit since.

Mavimbela said that the entity hopes residents will not only adhere to the restrictions because of possible fines.

“We rather want to instill a water conservation mentality.”
