The Jeppe police in conjunction with the Hillbrow police task team units arrested a suspect for an attempted hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The suspect was arrested on 6 September at about 8am in the Joburg east suburb.
According to Jeppe police spokesperson, Richard Munyai, a 47-year-old man was reversing his Mercedes Benz AMG in Bez Valley when a white Toyota Corolla with three men pulled up and one of the men armed with a firearm got out and approached the victim.
“The suspect pointed the firearm at the victim and demanded his car keys,” said Munyai.
“The victim handed over the car keys and the suspect got into the car and when he was about to drive off, the victim opened the door and grabbed the firearm and a fight ensued.”
The suspect then got out of the car and they tussled for the firearm and a shot went off, added Munyai.
He said the victim screamed for help and nearby residents came to his aid and overpowered the suspect.
“They assaulted him before they called the police and an ambulance.”
The police arrived on the scene and the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, said Munyai.
A firearm with its serial numbers filed off and 11 live rounds, a pair of scissors, cellphone and bank cards were found on the scene.
The suspect, in his early 30s, was charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is under police guard.
Munyai said the suspect would appear in court as soon as he was discharged from hospital adding that police investigations were continuing.
