UPDATE: Hillbrow Theatre’s shooter currently in Tembisa Hospital – Police

HILLBROW – The suspect will be charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

A suspect who allegedly shot eight people, killing one, at the Hillbrow Theatre on 27 August is believed to be a resident of Hillbrow.

The 33-year-old suspect was injured during a robbery incident in Greenstone Mall a day later and is now at Tembisa Hospital under police guard.

According to the spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, the suspect has not yet been charged for the Hillbrow Theatre shooting.

“He was arrested in the East Rand area and because he is still in the hospital, he has not yet been charged. What normally happens is that the police will take his medical record and present it to the court to place the matter on the roll,” said Zondo.

“We are waiting for him to appear in court either in Edenvale or Germiston and then he will then be charged also here in Joburg.”

Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, told North Eastern Tribune on 30 August that they have now placed the matter on the court’s roll.

“We have already forwarded his medical certificate to the Germiston court to place the matter on the roll and the case has been remanded for 5 September,” said Dlamini.

He, however, said the date is not yet officially set as the suspect still remains in hospital.
