Hillbrow police yet to charge Hillbrow theatre shooter

The suspect will be charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.

A suspect who allegedly shot eight people, killing one at the Hillbrow Theatre last Sunday, is believed to be a resident in Hillbrow.

The 33-year-old suspect, who is currently at Thembisa Hospital under police guard, was injured during a robbery incident on 28 August in Greenstone Mall following his alleged outrageous incident at the theatre a day earlier.

According to Hillbrow police spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, the suspect has not yet been charged for the Hillbrow Theatre shooting.

“He was arrested in the East Rand area and because he is still in the hospital, he has not yet been charged.

“What normally happens is that the police will take his medical record and present it to the court to place the matter on the roll,” said Zondo.

“We are waiting for him to appear in court either in Edenvale or Germiston and then he will then be charged also here in Joburg.”

Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, told North Eastern Tribune on 30 August that they have now placed the matter on the court’s roll.

“We have already forwarded his medical certificate to the Germiston court to place the matter on the roll and the case has been remanded for 5 September,” said Dlamini.

He, however, said the date is not yet officially set as the suspect still remains in hospital.

Dlamini promised to give a detailed update as soon as information is made available and the suspect is out of the hospital.

The firearm allegedly used during the robbery was recovered, said Dlamini.

“The suspect is expected to be charged with murder, attempted murder as well as armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm when he appears in court,” said Dlamini.
