Bramley’s Mam-Selowa is a champion of the future

Bramley – The school caters for vulnerable infants in society and provides them with basic learning techniques to prepare them for their formal schooling.

As part of the month-long Women’s Month celebrations, the North Eastern Tribune would like to honour Thandi Selowa for her dedication and determination to ensure that the children in Bramley View area have a brighter future.

Mam-Selowa, as she is affectionately known in her Bramley and Alexandra community, is the founder of Bramley View Pre-School. The school caters for vulnerable infants in society and provides them with basic learning techniques to prepare them for their formal schooling. Mam-Selowa said she only catered for children up to six years old and taught them how to read, write and how to communicate effectively.

A qualified Edu-Care professional of Midway College in Midrand, Mam-Selowa founded the project in 1995.

“I grew up in Alexandra and back then it was a challenge talking to other race groups in our communities. Because of the [different] languages and due to the apartheid system it was difficult to communicate.”

“I then decided to do a course in Edu-Care and graduated in 1994 and pursued my ambition to help young children who are struggling to effectively communicate with other ethnic groups.”

She works with volunteers who provide basic education such as reading, writing and drawing to prepare the children for Grade R.

Mam-Selowa said you needed to equip children with adequate skills at an early age. “Because a brain of a child is like a computer, if you don’t install programmes, and relevant programmes, it will remain empty.

“So if you want to equip your child, start while they’re still inside your tummy because they have their own ways of responding to noise and movements.”
