Melrose Arch to host SculptX and Mpumalanga Traditional Art Market in September

MELROSE NORTH – A traditional art market will be hosted from 2 to 3 September and the ScultpX exhibition will take place throughout the month of September

Melrose Arch will be celebrating art throughout the month of September with the Mpumalanga Traditional Art fair and the SculptX Fair 2017.

The Mpumalanga Traditional Art Market, a non-profit organisation which aims to empower artists in rural communities, will host the fair from 2 to 3 September.

Each year, the organisation hosts a market to celebrate Heritage Month and Melrose Arch was chosen as the location for this year’s market. The market will display a wide variety of art ranging from pottery, wood carvings and embroidery among others.

Series of bronze sculptures to be displayed in celebration of Women’s Month

The art on display will represent traditional Ndebele and Venda art as well as more contemporary pieces. Some artists will also be present to provide first-hand insight into the crafts. In addition to the market, there will also be live musical performances, poetry readings and traditional dance performances.

The SculptX sculpture exhibition will also be held at the Melrose Gallery from 6 September to 8 October. The gallery, which opened last year, will display sculptures by more than 30 artists including well-known artists such as Willie Bester, Pat Mautloa and Paul du Toit.

“We are very excited about SculptX Fair 2017,” said Craig Mark, director of The Melrose Gallery.

“Large sculptures will be installed in public spaces in the precinct as part of the SculptX Urban Sculpture Park. This launches a wonderful initiative that will see large sculptures adorning the precinct as a permanent activation.

“The SculptX Park aims to add to the beauty of the precinct while providing a valuable platform for sculptors to showcase their works and add value for those who work, live and play in Melrose Arch. We expect the SculptX Park to become a popular destination for art lovers and tourists alike.”
