Series of bronze sculptures to be displayed in celebration of Women’s Month

MELROSE NORTH – A series of sculptures by Jean Doyle will be spread across Melrose Arch to celebrate Women's Month.

Melrose Arch has unveiled a series of sculptures called The Ladies of Melrose Arch by renowned sculptor Jean Doyle.

In celebration of Women’s Month, 30 bronze statues will be displayed around Melrose Arch until 27 August.

The statues depict strong, curvaceous women who represent the cultural diversity of South Africa.

“I had an exhibition at Melrose Arch in 2005, during which time I spent many hours in various coffee shops and restaurants watching sophisticated people go by,” said Doyle.

“I was particularly taken with the beautiful women I saw, their elegance, poise and energy. I decided then I would do a series of sculptures of The Ladies of Melrose Arch.”

One sculpture outside the Paul cafe depicts two women sitting at a table having a drink. There is also a free seat to encourage visitors to take a picture with the sculpture. The second sculpture shows a woman carrying a shopping bag.

“I envisage this to be the first of about five sculptures in The Ladies of Melrose Arch series, all celebrating multicultural friendships and the beauty of the women seen in Melrose Arch.”

Mike Vermaak, managing director of Melrose Arch said, “We are honoured that an artist of Jean Doyle’s stature is paying tribute to Melrose Arch in such a manner.

“This sculpture captures perfectly one aspect of Melrose Arch and we look forward to seeing the rest of sculptures in years to come.”
