Parkview police search for man pretending to be City Power official

JOBURG – A bogus City Power Official attempts to gain access to residents' properties under the guise of replacing light bulbs with more energy efficient ones.

Parkview Police Station is warning residents of a man who is pretending to be a City Power employee in order to steal from homeowners who let him onto their property.

Police have been receiving complaints since May about the man who has been operating in Parkview, Parktown North and Craighall Park.

According to Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for Parkview Police Station, it has been alleged that the man is carrying equipment used by City Power to read meters.

“He claims that he is there to check if the meter is reading properly and to check which bulbs are used by homeowners so that he can replace them with the ones that save electricity,” said Sibeko.

She added that once inside the property, the man will ask residents to go check the light bulbs in another room and while he is alone he will steal items such as cellphones and laptops.

Sibeko added that no one had been harmed by the man as homeowners had only noticed their belongings missing once the man had left.

According to investigating officer, Detective Constable Oscar Ranthocha, the suspect targets homeowners on weekdays, typically from 12pm to 5pm.

Ranthocha added that he had verified with City Power if the man was an employee of City Power but he is unknown to them. Residents are warned not to allow anyone onto their property if they have not lodged any complaint with City Power.

Details: Anyone who recognises or knows the whereabouts of the man must please contact Detective Constable Oscar Ranthocha on 011 067 6000 or 011 486 5000 or 10111.
