Pedlars of goodwill

ORCHARDS – The Cycalive project will pedal off on 6 August.

The 20th instalment of the Cycalive project will take place on 6 August.

Cycalive is an annual event for Grade 11 schoolchildren of different cultural and religious backgrounds who are selected to represent the participating schools.

They cycle all the way from Johannesburg to Durban in support of building bridges and forming bonds between young South Africans, to raise funds for much-needed educational projects, and to highlight the importance of road safety and the Arrive Alive campaign among others.

The project was initiated by Torah Academy with an endorsement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The beginning of the ride will see a rousing send-off by motorcylists of Steel Wings and the Field Band at 9am.

Spokesperson for the academy Sue Belling said, “The departure will be from the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, Central Street, Houghton, as Cycalive is an official event on the Nelson Mandela calendar.”

The Torah Academy Grade 11 boys will be joined by riders of Moletsane High School and Pace Commercial Secondary School, both from Soweto.

Belling added, “Also part of the team will be cyclists from Israel… principals and teachers from the three schools and a support team of medics.”

The boys have prepared care packages that include stationery items and refreshments for patients at Newcastle Hospital and for children with disabilities at Ethembeni School in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal.

They will also distribute these at various rural schools along the way.

The cyclists will arrive in Durban on 10 August with a welcome by the Field Band from KZN, civic dignitaries and community leaders.

Thereafter, they will be hosted by the Council for Kwa-Zulu Natal Jewry.
