Suspected car thief arrested by Joburg police in Fairland

JOBURG – A 32-year-old is in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen motor vehicle during a crime combating operation conducted in the Fairland area.

The Johannesburg Central Cluster Crime Combating Unit arrested a 32-year-old man for possession of a stolen motor vehicle in Fairland on 11 July.

The police’s Xoli Mbele confirmed the arrest of the suspect and said the car’s vehicle identification number, which is composed of 17 characters, helped the police to identify the stolen vehicle.

“Police were busy conducting stop and searches [in the area] when they stopped a blue Toyota Corolla,” said Mbele. “When comparing, it turned up a positive result, suggesting that the vehicle was stolen.” Mbele added that the vehicle was previously reported as stolen at the Brixton Police Station.

A police investigation is underway and the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
