Uber Drivers Movement declares more than 15 areas as no-go zones
JOBURG - Following several incidents of violence, the Uber Drivers Movement has declared several areas as no-go zones for the sake of safety.
The Uber Drivers Movement has declared more than 15 areas in Gauteng as no-go zones for pick-ups and drop-offs due to tensions with meter taxi drivers.
The Star reported on 18 July that the movement shared a list of pick-up points where members have been allegedly beaten and their vehicles torched.
Teresa Munchick, co-founder and representative of the movement, spoke to The Star and noted that they were worried that more lives could be lost in the ‘no-go areas’ if a solution was not found.
“There are very specific no-go zones like the Summit Club in Hillbrow, Royal Park in Joubert Park, and the CBD [specifically around the Carlton Centre] is bad,” said Munchick.
“All Gautrain stations [Park Station, Rosebank, Sandton, Marlboro, Centurion, Hatfield and Pretoria] are also dangerous. Trouble flares up intermittently, but at Park Station, there is always trouble. Unfortunately, the malls have also been targeted – Eastgate, Mall of Africa and Southgate have had some reports of violence.”
Munchick also urged all Uber passengers to try and avoid entering an Uber vehicle when there is a noticeable number of metered taxis nearby.
“There are a few places that are no-go zones. These attacks are now a daily occurrence.”
