Sunny Shell reopens following months of ensuring there is no risk of water contamination

GREENSIDE – The Sunny Shell undertook a Risk Based Site Asset Management programme to ensure thee would be no risk of water contamination.

The Sunny Shell petrol station located at the intersection of Barry Hertzog Road and Linden Road reopened on 14 July following three-and-a-half months of improvements to the underground pipes.

The renovations focused on ensuring that the environment would be protected in the event of any underground leaks. The site of the Sunny Shell is located within 500m of a borehole that supplies nearby houses and a mosque. The Emmarentia Dam is also within 500m of the Shell meaning that the water in the dam would also be at risk in the event of a leak.

The Risk Based Site Asset Management programme ensures that in the event of the risk of a leak, Sunny Shell will be able to manage the leak effectively and immediately.

Azhar Cassim, the owner of the Sunny Shell, said, “The work that has been done here has been done underground, protecting the water system because there is a high water table and for that reason, this project was undertaken.”

Cassim added that during the project meant they had to sacrifice trading for three-and-a-half months but that he felt it was an obligation to ensure the environment would be protected.
