Cotlands visit Joburg Zoo for Mandela Day

PARKVIEW – Today almost 300 children from Cotlands and 80 caregivers had the opportunity to visit the Johannesburg Zoo as part of the Mandela Day celebrations.

For most of these children, it was the first time they have had an opportunity to visit a zoo. In fact, for some of them, it was the first time that they were able to leave the area that they live in.

Thanks to an invite from City Parks, many of these children were able to spend a wonderful Mandela Day exploring new horizons.

“A lot of these children come from very impoverished backgrounds, squatter camps and disadvantaged areas in Soweto, Protea South and even as far as Olievenhoutbosch as well,” said Shareen Miller, Gauteng regional manager for Cotlands.

“They really enjoyed it, we ensured that we got them to all the favourites, the monkeys, the lions, the tigers and the elephants,” she added.

The children were also treated to a wonderful picnic that included entertainment, lunch and a party pack, provided by the various sponsors. There was a lot of enthusiasm from the children, said Miller.

“I think generally what gets these kids the most excited, is that they are getting on a bus that they love the most, and it usually causes the most excitement,” Miller added with a smile.

She also said that if people would like to get more involved with Cotlands they can visit their website.
