Mashaba gives away co-president of World Congress of Metropolises position

JOBURG – Made up of 138 metropolises from around the world, Makhura will represent all the metros within the province, including Joburg.

The City of Johannesburg’s Mayor Herman Mashaba congratulated Gauteng premier David Makhura after his election as co-president of the World Congress of the Metropolises, a position previously held by the City and ultimately the mayor.

Made up of 138 metropolises from around the world, Makhura will represent all the metros within the province, including Joburg.

Mashaba said that since the new administration has only been in place for 10 months, he opted to step aside and focus on his ‘domestic responsibilities’. “At this early stage, I would like to place greater priority on delivering basic services, especially to our poorest and most vulnerable, creating an environment that stimulates job creation for the 800 000 unemployed of our City, as well as ensuring transparent and honest governance.”

Metropolis World Congress, now in its 32nd year, is the largest gathering of major cities from all over the world and promotes collaborative projects and learning programmes between them, he said.

“I wish Premier David Makhura the best in this new feat of promoting the Gauteng province as an ideal destination for trade and investment.”
