One suspect died and another is still at large following an attempted armed robbery at a garage in Houghton on 25 June.
Spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station Captain Elliot Tshivhase said the incident occurred at 4.30am when two suspects entered the garage located on the corner of Glenhove and Central roads in Houghton.
Tshivhase said the cashier at the garage was in the cashier room when he noticed the two suspects enter the store, raising his suspicions. “He pressed the panic button when one of the suspects pointed a firearm at him and instructed him to open the till and hand over the money,” added Tshivhase.
The armed suspect moved towards the coffee shop, while the other was observing the situation. Soon, on-duty officers from Cortac security entered the store. A shootout ensued in the store and the suspect was shot dead.
The second suspect fled the scene and is still at large. Tshivhase added that the car they travelled in belonged to the suspect who died.
Tshivhase said the police are still looking for the second suspect.
