Norwood’s Mandela Day ambassador donates blankets in Soweto

NORWOOD – ' Stitch by stitch we are knitting our nation together in the name of Tata Madiba'

Lynton Lefevre, ambassador for the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative in Norwood, organised and distributed 42 handmade blankets to a needy organisation in Soweto.

Lefevre said the handmade blankets were donated by the Norwood Wooligans and various individuals in the suburb, as part of the annual charity drive.

The blankets, according to the ambassador, are of different designs and sizes and were knitted with love for the children of Nkanyezi Stimulation Centre.

“All the 47 Blankets are handmade and donated by a variety of people from different parts of the suburb and the country. The children at Nkanyezi Stimulation Centre all suffer from four or more disabilities and their needs are ongoing and specific, thus our initiative,” said Lefevre.

The blankets were all crocheted, multi-coloured and made of wool, which makes them lighter than a conventional blanket but doesn’t compromise the warmth factor, he added.

According to the ambassador, Nkanyezi Stimulation Centre sent out an appeal for donations, and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day responded. Lefevre said this was the first of its kind for both parties, and they plan to work together in future.

“The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative continues to try and serve any needy beneficiary, wherever possible if we have an available stock of blankets. For people or volunteers who would like to assist either by knitting, buying or facilitating blanket donations, they are more than welcome to assist,” he said.

Lefevre said 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has thousands of people who have the will but not the wool to continue producing blankets for this amazing initiative. Therefore the organisation encourages more people to assist by donating wool, or blankets, to help in their quest to honour the former statesman, Nelson Mandela.
