Westbury gunman handed a 26-year prison sentence

JOBURG – Broadwin Muller (33), accused of randomly shooting at a family in Westbury in August last year was handed an effective 26-year prison sentence at the Newlands Magistrates' Court in Johannesburg on 9 June.

The Westbury gunman, Broadwin Muller (33) was recently found guilty on three charges of attempted murder and for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Muller was sentenced to an effective 26-year prison term at the Newlands Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg on 9 June.

The court heard that at about 3pm on 9 August last year, Muller allegedly randomly started shooting at a family who were enjoying a Women’s Day braai at their Laurence Wessenaar Street residence in Westbury. The motive for the shooting was never uncovered.

“A 35-year-old male was shot several times in the upper and lower body, while a 32-year-old female sustained a broken leg [after she tripped and fell] while attempting to run away,” said Captain Xoli Mbele.

“However, through the assistance of the community, the accused was apprehended on 1 September in Westbury, less than a month after the shooting incident.

“The firearm used in the commission of a crime as well as live rounds were recovered. Upon further investigations, it was found that the firearm’s serial number had been filed off. The good conviction is the result of the diligent work carried out by police in the case,” he said.

“We’d also like to thank the community for being our eyes and ears in the continued fight against crime.”

For attempted murder, Broadwin received a 10-year prison sentence, while concurrent sentences of 15 years for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and one year for the illegal possession of ammunition were also handed down.
