Paterson Park gets new revamp

The park is fully landscaped, planted with pathways and will have play areas.

Construction of the four-hectare Paterson Park in Norwood is currently underway and the main contractor says the community can expect a fully-fledged recreational park with new exciting features.

The primary need was to upgrade the stormwater infrastructure to comply with current management plans and the main contractor, Murray and Dickson Construction, said the opportunity to upgrade and further develop the park was then included.

The park will have a natural look with a newly constructed water stream flowing through it, fully landscaped and planted with pathways, play areas and two pedestrian bridges across the stream.

Head of roads and earthworks at Murray and Dickson Construction, Chris Porter, said they were awarded the contract for the upgrading of the culvert and stream at Paterson Park in March and work commenced on 14 April, last year.

Porter said the first phase of heavy construction works are complete and the landscaping, bridges and paving construction is now underway.
He said the works included the construction of 400m of a large precast concrete stormwater culvert underground through the community centre property and below Paterson Road.

“Then there’s a construction of the celebration pond flowing out into a newly constructed stream section which is approximately 400m in length. Over 80 new trees have been planted supplementing the existing trees which were saved and maintained, 11 000m² of new lawn and over 15 000 plants and wetland grasses planted,” said Porter.

More than 18 SMMEs were utilised on the project relating to paving and the provision of facilities.

“Over 100 people have been employed from the local community by Murray and Dickson Construction and the SMMEs involved include women and youth. In addition, over R600 000 was spent on additional training and development of many people from the community.

“On-site training and valuable experience was gained by all who were involved in the project.”

Also expected later in the project, Porter cited a new community centre with varied facilities which has just been started that will adjoin the park across Paterson Road. Work is expected to be complete by the end of August.
