Court orders Lyndhurst illegal auto mechanic to move

LYNDHURST – The owner has been given a 14-day notice to vacate the land owned by the City.

Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer confirmed to North Eastern Tribune that an auto mechanic workshop operating in Lyndhurst on the corner of Pretoria and Drome roads is operating illegally.

Rugheimer said they had All Postsobtained an interdict ordering the owner of the business to vacate the property. The owner’s name is known to the paper but he declined to speak to us.

It had been reported that City of Joburg inspectors had found the operations at the site illegal.

Rugheimer said this was a long-standing problem since she became the ward councillor and they have been dealing with it in conjunction with Environmental Health, City Parks and Johannesburg Property Company.

“Johannesburg Property Company together with Metro police went and issued the owner with a 14-day notice to vacate the property,” she said

“The owner has been approached many times by the various entities and has been very abrupt and rude with the various officials.”

The illegal workshop and spray painting have been a concern to residents and the fact that the owner had allowed others to use the property for a hair salon and other businesses, Rugheimer said was more of a concern.

She said the owner had not only violated the bylaws of the City, he had also encouraged others to do the same. As there is no electricity connection on the property, the owner makes use of a generator which disturbs the residents as well.

“This area is zoned as an open public space and therefore no person is allowed to occupy it for any reason whatsoever.

“At long last, I can report that a court order was delivered on 26 May to the occupants of the illegal workshop to vacate the premises.”
