Parkhurst Recreation Centre to undergo much-needed renovations

PARKHURST – The Parkhurst Recreation Centre has received R500 000 to repair the roof and flooring.

The Parkhurst Recreation Centre has received R500 000 from the City of Johannesburg for much-needed renovations.

The construction will begin on 30 May and will take an estimated four to six weeks to complete, depending on whether or not there are delays.

Annette Volschenk, the manager of the recreation centre, said, “The roof will be replaced. It’s leaking like a sieve at the moment. They will also be doing the flooring and some painting and the potholes in the parking lot will be repaired.”

While the roof is being repaired no activities will take place at the recreation centre. For safety reasons, the centre has to be closed.

“It’s been a problem for a long time, but with the help of our ward councillor we managed to get a budget for it.”

Tim Truluck, the ward councillor for Ward 117 said, “The Parkhurst Recreation Centre has been neglected for over 20 years despite it being one of the most used recreation centres in Joburg with members across age, gender and ethnic boundaries.”

Truluck added that the new changes for hiring contractors and apportioning the budget had to be formalised. “After several months we feared the money would not be spent. We managed to come up with a plan where different officials could work together to get the much-needed renovations done,” he said.

Truluck said the Parkhurst Recreation Centre was one of 10 recreation centres, swimming pools, libraries and stadiums which will receive money for renovations.
