Norwood Library hosts book sale

NORWOOD –The Friends of Norwood Library hosted a highly successful book sale.

The Friends of Norwood Library hosted a successful book sale outside Norwood Spar on 28 May.

The organisation raised money for the library while emphasising the importance of reading to the community. Elaine Frysh, who has been involved with the organisation for 18 years said, “Prof. Jonathan Jansen has shared the shocking statistic that 60 per cent of South African children cannot read at even a basic level at the end of

Grade 4. Reading ability is vastly enhanced by having books in a home, and for many, the only source of books is the local library.”

Books donated to the Friends were sold off at the ridiculously low price of R20 per kilo.

Frysch added, “Many happy shoppers left the sale with handsful of books, and change in their pockets. For others, the joy was in browsing through the varied titles on sale, and sharing recommendations with others.”

The organisation also runs reading sessions for children at the Norwood Library every Saturday between 9am and 12 noon and calls on the local community to donate any books to be sold at their sales.
