UPDATE: Gang rape hearing via AVR

JOBURG – The 11 suspects accused of raping a woman in an abandoned building in the inner city are set to appear in court via Audio Visual Recording on 20 June.

The case of the 11 suspects accused of raping a pregnant woman in a hijacked building in Lilian Ngoyi Street on 16 May is set to resume in the Johannesburg Regional Court on 20 June.

The case was postponed for further investigation.

The men face charges of rape and kidnapping after they allegedly accosted a 22-year-old pregnant woman while she was walking home with a male colleague at about 5am on 16 May.

The woman’s colleague was allegedly assaulted at gunpoint before she was dragged into the dark building where the 11 men allegedly raped her.

The suspects have been remanded in custody at the Johannesburg Central Prison.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Phindi Louw said the suspects’ next appearance will be via video technology. “The reason for the use of AVR is because it is only a postponement, and necessary for when suspects will not be physically present in court.”

City Buzz will provide further updates on the matter.
