New school for children in need

VICTORIA PARK – King David will open a new remedial school next year to serve the needs of all children.

The King David community of schools is preparing to introduce a new remedial school at their Victory Park campus which will open in January next year.

The school, which will be known as King David Ariel, will seek to help children who experience barriers to learning and will receive individual attention to assist their academic progression.

The principal of King David Ariel, Sally Ann Knowles said, “The South African Board of Jewish Education, in their pursuit of excellence in remedial education, decided that there are some children in mainstream education struggling with certain issues such as anxiety and particular learning disabilities.”

The decision to establish a school that will help all pupils with their needs will be turned into reality with construction beginning in July this year.

Clinical director of the school Genevieve Sandler said, “We will be catering for grades one, two and three with two classes and will grow from there. All classes will include a remedial teacher. There will also be an occupational therapist, speech therapist and a neuro-developmental physiotherapist available. “

Knowles said the school will strive in keeping children within the King David community by allowing children at the new school to participate in all the community projects, sport and social activity rather than taking them out of the mainstream system and into the remedial school.

Sandler added that the school will attempt to take away the negative stigma of the remedial system which adds more anxiety to a student when they are brought in. “For a child to transition to remedial then back to mainstream is difficult, particularly for children who are very anxious and can’t adapt easily. So doing it in the same community will help them a lot.”
