Police arrest suspect for possession of unlicensed firearm in Jeppestown

JOBURG – Johannesburg East Cluster police have arrested a suspect in connection with the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The police from the Johannesburg East cluster have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The suspect was recently arrested on the corner of Fox and John Page streets in Jeppestown.

According to Johannesburg East Cluster spokesperson Captain Richard Munyayi, police were on duty and patrolling when they noticed a silver Chevrolet driving along Betty Street into oncoming traffic.

The police tried to stop him but the driver continued to Fox Street, still driving into the oncoming traffic.

The police followed the car and managed to stop the car with its three occupants. “They searched the car and found a firearm in the possession of one of the suspects,” explained Munyayi.

Police then questioned the suspect about the licence of the firearm. The suspect could not produce the licence and claimed that the firearm belonged to a person they gave a lift to and he left it in their car.

“The firearm with three live rounds was confiscated and the suspect was arrested. He appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court recently and the case has been postponed for further investigations.”
