One of Johannesburg’s most prominent art houses has raised R10 000 for a centre which uses art therapy when working with the youth.
Once a light industrial building and now a relic of Doornfontein’s industrial past, August House is the art space of more than 40 pan-African artists; in what could possibly be the most beautiful community art studio in Johannesburg.
Boasting high ceilings, large wall spaces and ample natural light, four storeys make up one of the largest contemporary artist community buildings in Johannesburg.
The artists at August House hosted a Facebook auction over the weekend and donated some of their most impressive works for purchase by the public.
As an artist community, it was only fitting that the centre opted for the proceeds of the auction to be handed over to the art therapy centre, Lefika La Phodiso.
Lefika La Phodiso is a place which offers inner-city children a safe space where they can be artistically free.
Some of the artists who contributed to the great cause were Setlamorago Mashilo who won the inaugural Turbine Art Fair and Sylt Emerging Artist Award in 2014, Themba Khumalo who exhibited his work at the FNB Joburg Art Fair, Lehlogonolo Mashabe who held an artist residency in France and Bronwyn Lace who is the director of The Centre for the Less Good Idea in Maboneng.

The auction, which ended on 14 May, raised R10 000 for Lefika La Phodiso.
