Suspect busted for robbery in Jeppestown

JOBURG – Members of the Operation Command Centre have arrested a suspect for business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Members of the Operation Command Centre (OCC) arrested a suspect for business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm on 7 May in Jeppestown.

At about 6pm a 28-year-old businesswoman was in her shop in Marshall Street when four men entered and allegedly pointed firearms at her and her brother.

According to Captain Richard Munyayi, spokesperson for the Johannesburg East Cluster, the suspects demanded money and allegedly took an amount of R1 000 that was on the table. “They also took groceries and walked out of the shop.

“The police passed by and the victims informed them about the robbery. The police chased the suspects who were on foot, and managed to arrest one suspect who was in possession of a firearm. A 9mm pistol with a magazine and live rounds were confiscated.”

The Cluster Operational Command Centre was recently launched by the Johannesburg East Cluster Commander, Major General Dimakatso Ndaba who oversees Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville police stations. The centre has already yielded positive results, as the police officers are focusing on those stations and dealing with crimes such as business and house robberies, hijacking and murder.

“There have been several arrests made since the inception of the unit. The cluster commander has assembled police officers from the seven police stations to establish the OCC and are reporting at the cluster but working at all police stations, focusing on hotspots,” explained Munyayi.
