NCPF commends JMPD for arresting alleged drug dealer in Norwood

NORWOOD – The suspect pretends to be selling cigarettes while in fact he sells drugs

The Norwood Community Policing Forum (NCPF) has commended the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s officers for arresting an alleged drug dealer on 3 May in Norwood.

The suspect was arrested at the spot where he allegedly pretends to sell cigarettes.

The forum chairperson Wandile Yani praised the officers for their work and said it was a step towards getting rid of dealers.

Yani was speaking at a forum public meeting held at Norwood Primary School which was attended by Metro police, Norwood police station officers and ward councillors.

Yani said Metro officers had done a sterling job and added that the forum was encouraged by the work they did.

“You see those guys,” he indicated to the officers, “when think you are in hiding they will definitely sniff you out.”

“These guys who pretend to be selling sweets and cigarettes but in fact sell drugs in our neighbourhood are scaring away our legitimate businesses.

“We have dealers selling next to Woolworths and Spar and they are inconveniencing these stores with their illegal activities.

“We commend JMPD and SAPS partnering together in this and ensuring that the suspect faces the full might of the law.”

Meantime, Yani also alleged that prostitutes solicit business at the traffic lights next to the Norwood Post Office, and added that this is another matter that needed to be looked into.

“When you go there at night, you will see there’s illegal businesses there including prostitution and it needs to be stopped. Our police need to do something about it, and us, as residents also need to help by reporting these activities to the police,” he said.

He encouraged the community to speak out against crime and encouraged them to feel free to contact the Norwood station commander if they need to.
