Two parks earmarked for upgrades

Councillor invites the private sector to give a helping hand

Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer wants to develop two parks in her constituency to ensure active family and community activities.

The councillor said she had plans to develop and improve the park in River Park as well as a park on Wessel Road in Lyndhurst. According to Rugheimer, she plans to add more recreational and social features to the parks to enable families and the general public to have fun.

She invited the private sector to open their wallets because the City of Joburg does not have enough funds yet, to ensure that these plans are realised as soon as possible.

“For River Park park we would like to have a community hall, including a training centre, so that we can have a decent play park for the children in the area and also a picnic area for the families. However, as City Parks don’t have the funding yet, we are looking for private sponsorship,” she said.

Rugheimer mentioned that Future Nation School presented a proposal to City Parks to upgrade the park in Lyndhurst for the community. The proposal, she said, it is to fence it off for the safety of the children so that both the Future Nation and Lyndhurst Primary schools can utilise it, together with the community.

Rugheimer said beautiful parks are beneficial to any community. It is her goal as a councillor to provide pleasant and safe places where community members can enjoy themselves.

“Parks provide a place for a family to enjoy time together. It would also be great if we could have an outdoor gym in these parks,” she said.

“We [want] to get this started as soon as possible. Proposals will be presented to City Parks and Joburg Property Company (JPC) and once they have the approval they will get going.”
