Hyde Park High School hosts Easter Sports Festival filled with sporting talent

SANDTON – Hyde Park High recently celebrated 60 years of education and hosted an Easter Sports Festival.

Hyde Park High School recently hosted an Easter Sports Festival during the April holidays to celebrate its 60th year of providing top quality education.

The festival was held from 1 to 3 April with hockey, netball and rugby teams filling the sports fields.

The school hosted Carter High, Hillcrest High and Kloof High schools from KwaZulu-Natal as well as Crawford College Sandton, Edenglen High, Edenvale High and Greenside High schools from Johannesburg.

The event formed part of the school’s 60 years in education celebrations and every effort was made to have the fields and school grounds in excellent condition for this showcase.

The festival is focused on team building and provides the boys and girls with the opportunity to make new friends while enjoying the challenges of good sportsmanship on the sports field.

The school’s headmaster, Manolis Vogiatzis said, “The role that sport has to play in education must never be underestimated: school spirit, team pride and a positive reaction and behaviour in teenagers are just some of the benefits.”

Live entertainment was enjoyed by the parents and spectators, with plenty of food trucks to keep everyone refreshed. The event was well attended by parents as well as many alumni which added to the fun and rivalry on the sports field.

Shannon Parkins plays out a short corner supported by Kelsey Weeks, Jade Jardine and Leona Mavusi in their match against Hillcrest.

The hockey boys were met with fierce competition, however, Hyde Park High School pulled off three wins, beating the fierce Hillcrest side 1–0 on the final day and achieving a draw against Edenglen High with a 0–0 finish. The school’s girls’ hockey team were well prepared and beat Crawford Sandton and Greenside High, giving them motivation for the season ahead.

In true sportsmanship, Hyde Park High provided two players for the Hillcrest netball team who did not have a full team complement. This provided some exciting watching as Hillcrest had the strength of two home team players on their side.

Andrew Ingman, first team rugby captain, leads the team onto the field.

The rugby boys arrived on the field in their new sponsored kit provided by Fury, excited to get the festival underway. They set the tone of passion for their sport and played with guts and heart, displaying true school spirit and sportsmanship.

The festival will be played in KwaZulu-Natal next year and Hyde Park High School was proud to be able to host this event.
