Old Eds Premier League spins their way to the top

HOUGHTON – Old Eds Premier league cricket team are back on top.

After the disappointment of being relegated at the end of last season, the Old Eds Premier League cricket team won the B division title to gain promotion back to the A division of the league.

According to coach/player Brandon Buckley, it was a team effort with the hard work done at practice and this manifested itself in the matches over the season. “It was a happy team that worked hard,” he said. The format suited our style of play and with South African cricketers not being happy against spin bowling, we were able to field four spinners in most games who were well supported by our two-seamers.”

And the spinners had a good time of it with Buckley being the leading wicket-taker in the league with 29. Fellow spinner Scott Conway was 8th on the list with 22 scalps and seamer David Sator underlined his value with 16. “The wicket at Old Eds tended to bounce and turn more than usual and we utilised this well throughout the home games,” commented Buckley.

The batting was led by Jaco Delport with 415 runs and captain Murray Workman with 406.

“I am nervous but excited more so than at the start of this season,” said Buckley. “I am looking to bring in about five new players including a couple of youngsters. Also, I am hoping to entice back some of our former schoolboy players who have now finished at UJ. The attraction to them is we can now offer A division cricket to any player and this is a huge advantage.”
