Wedge Gardens Treatment Centre provided its residents with the opportunity to garden as part of a therapeutic project.
The centre, which is run by the Rand Aid Association, recognises that people who have battled addiction issues in the past, or who have overcome other challenges, may need a more nurturing environment in which to live and heal.
The gardening project forms part of the centre’s occupational therapy programme and is run by therapist Kendra Neethling.
“The aim of the gardening project was to encourage the gentlemen to make use of pre-vocational skills that encourage planning, communication, sustained motivation and effort to produce an end product that one can be proud of,” she said.
“They were able to concretely see the evidence of effort, perseverance, teamwork and determination. In line with one of the main 12-step ideas, the garden now stands as a testament to the philosophy that through care and consideration, anything can flourish.”
