Violent mob launch assault on Metro police in Rosettenville

JOBURG – Metro police were at the receiving end of a violent attack by a mob after responding to an accident in Rosettenville on 9 April.

A mob of violent bystanders took the law by the scruff of the neck and allegedly attacked Metro police officers responding to a motor vehicle accident on the corner of Prairie and Verona streets in Rosettenville shortly after 8pm on 9 April.

According to Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the attack was prompted after officers, as is standard protocol, asked the group some questions pertaining to the accident. “When officers asked about the whereabouts of one of the drivers, the group responded by [launching an assault] on them. Officers then called for back-up and a female officer was first to arrive. The group then proceeded to attack her, too,” he said.

“During the scuffle, an attempt was made to disarm the officers, resulting in a shot being fired. The [stray bullet] injured a man in the neck and he was transported to the South Rand Hospital where he later reportedly succumbed to his wounds.

“Arrests are yet to be made and the incident is being investigated internally as well as by the South African Police and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).”
