St Mary’s Waverley hosts 18th annual St Mary’s Investec Hockey Festival

WAVERLEY – The 18th annual St Mary's Investec Hockey Festival saw over R78 000 being donated to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.

 

The 18th annual St Mary’s Investec hockey festival took place at St Mary’s School, Kingsmead College and Rodean School.

The festival attracts hockey players from 32 different schools in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. In all, 188 games were played throughout the festival.

Investec has sponsored the festival since 2008, pledged to donate R200 to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre for every goal scored. This year, 308 goals were scored during the festival and a total of R78 135 will be donated to the centre.

Lelentle Mosimane, in Grade 12 at St Mary’s and the head of the school’s media team said, “The festival is amazing, it’s got a very rich vibe, and the culture, food and sports are amazing.”

The festival ended with an intense final between St Anne’s Diocesan College from KwaZulu-Natal and C&N Meisieskool Oranje from Bloemfontein. Oranje won 3–1 making them the festival champions for the fourth year in a row.

Shelley Jones, a member of the national hockey team and a representative for the Investec Hockey Academy, was present at the festival to show her support.

“Being involved in youth hockey is my passion, so to be able to watch good calibre school hockey like this is really, really special. I think this tournament has created a really incredible platform to showcase school talent,” said Jones.
