Sandton SPCA and Kameraz host photography competition to raise money for the SPCA

A photography competition to raise money for the SPCA has so far raised more than R2 000.

Kameraz, a photographic shop at the Rosebank Mall approached the Sandton SPCA with the idea of creating a photo competition for all pet owners.

The competition has a R25 entrance fee, R15 of which would be donated to the SPCA and the other R10 would cover the cost of printing the photograph for the exhibition. So far, more than R2 000 has been raised for the animal association from the entry fees.

The exhibition, which will run from 10 to 23 April at the Rosebank Mall, will showcase the 182 photos which have been entered into the competition as well as pictures from several professional photographers.

Michelle York, who is the fundraiser for the Sandton SPCA, said although this was the first exhibition, the association would love to make it an annual event. She said,”There is no discrimination – it’s any pet, excluding exotics, adopted or not. It’s just a celebration of the love we have for our animals.

”I think it shows people that very often adopted animals are not necessarily damaged or mutts. We have people say ‘they were strays because they were unloved or unmanageable and the owners obviously didn’t want them’, but that’s a myth I think all animal shelters have to face.”

The owner of Kameraz, Johan Greybe said, “We decided on the SPCA because it’s one of our pet projects, sorry to use the pun. I think the quote that says, ‘Pets make us better people’ is so true and we just hope that this is sustainable.”

The four guest photographers will be the judges for the competition and will decide who the top three are. There are a variety of sponsored prizes, including a two-day getaway, which will be awarded to the winner.
